Jez and the Scots

I have many great and funny memories of Jez so I'll share one of them here. Just so all his relatives know up front - it was us Scottish guys who were 100% responsible for getting Jez arrested - he was an innocent bystander!   Just to set the scene for anyone who doesn't already know. Jez came to Nicholls State and joined the Track team. There were already a bunch of us Scots on the team and we instantly took to Jez and just naturally made it our job to look out for him and increase his social circle.......we mostly helped but there were the odd occasions we got into a liitle bit of trouble.......this is one of them......   One typical Saturday night we all went into town in Thibodaux for a few drinks. Jez isn't really allowed to drink however he does like a Guiness so we always made sure he just had the one or 2 so as not to mess with his meds too much. After we'd had a good few drinks in the local Brew Pub we headed over the road to the local night club (Rocky's or something like that) and as I was crossing the road there was a half full plastic cup of beer lying in the street. Being scottish, anything lying in the street is fair game to be booted, soccer style, so I sent the cup of beer harmlessley flying up the road. Seconds later Jez obviously thought this was the thing to do and did the same with next item on the road........unfortunately that item was a glass bottle of beer. Also unfortunately Jez is less practiced in soccer than us lads so his aim wasn't the best and it smashed into the side of the police car just outside the club.  Moments later Jez was handcuffed up against a wall in front of a police officer who didn't look in the mood to discuss the situation. I immediately went into 'sober mode' and tried to calmly explain what I'd done and that Jez was just copying me and that we were 'extremely sorry officer'. We usually had a good relationship with the cops in town (we even got rides home from them sometimes after nights out) but this one was a new guy. When my explanation didn't seem to be working, Chris 'kindly' stepped in to my aid to explain that this wasn't really neccesary etc etc etc. The police officer suggested that Chris 'stay out of it if he didn't want to get arrested too' to which he replied with the now immortal words 'You can suggest anything you like officer'. So now Chris was pinned up against the wall along with Jez getting handcuffs put on him. The officer looked at me and I gave him a knowing 'yep officer dibble, I'll just back off here and let you get on with your job since you're doing it sooooo well' look.    As soon as the car drove away I got on the phone to a local lad on the track team, Eddie, who had a pickup, dragged him out of bed and we went down to the station. In hindsight we were so glad that that Chris had a big mouth so that at least Jez had someone to look after him and keep him calm. On the way to the station to get them out we were trying to figure out how we could get Jez out but leave Chris in for the night....just as a laugh but figured that would be too difficult.   In the end we got them out which may have involved a call to Nancy explaining the situation and how sorry we were.....I think Nancy may have recieved a few calls like that from us over the years!! No harm was done and Jez had a great story to tell people about how he was led astray (AGAIN) by a bunch of crazy Scots.   Jez will be sorely missed by us all......(Drew Sharkey, Jason Gowans, Matt Kelso, Duncan Storrie, Chris Goodhall & Steve Watson) - he was part of our track and field family in Louisiana, he was part of our Scottish family in Louisiana, he was our friend and he will always be an honarary Scot. Rest in peace Jez!
