Behrnes, Maurice Hollmann "Red" of Slaughter, LA passed away April 22, 2016 at the home of his granddaughter, Salena Harvin in Zachary, LA. Red was born in Baton Rouge, LA to Grover C. & Gaynell (Hollmann) Behrnes on June 3, 1922. He graduated high school from Istrouma High School in Baton Rouge, LA in 1940. Red worked many government projects before entering the Coast Guard in 1942 during WWII. He joined the Coast Guard with the intent of defending the American coast line but found himself serving about two years in the North Atlantic on the DE -250 Hurst. The DE-250 Hurst was responsible for escorting and defending European bound convoys from German subs. Later he found himself a member of the landing parties in the South Pacific searching islands for Japanese troops. He was discharged in 1946 as Gunner's Mate 2/C and was known to his fellow servicemen as "Bird Dog".
He married Hazel Fontenot of Turkey Creek, LA in 1951. Two sons were born to this union, Maurice Todd and Brian Keith. Hazel passed away in January, 1982 and he later married Faye (Sumrall) Schneider of Baton Rouge, LA. Faye passed away in April 2015. After returning home from the military, Red worked in the Baton Rouge and Zachary area as an auto-body repairman including Nelson & East Ford in Zachary. In 1957 he went to work in the maintenance department for W.R. Grace which later became Allied Chemical. Hard work and family always came first, he was heavily involved in his church and was always ready to lend a helping hand for friends and neighbors.
Survivors include his sons, Todd (Marianne) Behrnes of Worland, WY and Keith Behrnes, wife Tammy and their granddaughter, Skylar of St. Francisville, LA; grandson Sonny (Brandi) and children Brooke (Wayne) Gray & their son, Wayne Jr.; Alyssa (Derek) Fontenot & their daughter, Jade; and Tripp of Zachary, LA; granddaughter, Salena B. (Jon) Harvin and children, Tanner, Cheyenne, Jace and Cade of Zachary, LA., a nephew, James Roy Behrnes, a niece, Nina Kay Behrnes Depew, stepchildren, step-grandchildren, and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Hazel, his wife Faye, his brother Carlyle "Jerry", his close friend and uncle Joseph Hart "Joe" Behrnes and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation will be at Charlet Funeral Home, Inc., Zachary, LA on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm and Wednesday, April 27, 2016 from 9:00 am until service time at 11:00 am service. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Baker, LA
