Obituary for Roberto Melendez Calix

Roberto Meléndez Cálix, 82, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014, at Lane Memorial Hospital, Zachary. He was a native of Tela, Atlántida, Honduras, and retired after 27 years with Cal-Chem. Visiting will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, and 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, at Charlet Funeral Home, Zachary, Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home conducted by Deacon Don Ard. Survivors include his wife of 62.5 years, Tonya Cálix; three daughters, Rosa Maria Cálix Heygood and John M.R. Heygood, Antioch, CA, Irma L. Cálix Krueger and Todd L. Krueger, Newcastle, WA, and Sandra Ivette Cálix Damish and Todd L. Damish, Gig Harbor, WA; a niece, Olimpia Swindler and Brian Swindler, Baton Rouge; two sons, Roberto A. Cálix, Los Angeles, CA, and Daniel A. Cálix and Myree Bourgeois Cálix, Baton Rouge; a sister, Carmenza Cálix Jeffress, Plano TX; a brother, Dr. Juan Cálix and Julia Lopez de Cálix, San Salvador, El Salvador; 11 grandchildren, Bryan Heygood, Capt./Dr. Erick Heygood and spouse J.C., Vanessa Heygood, Capt./Dr. T, Nicole Kruger Barry and spouse Brent Barry, Rosalyn Krueger, Kristyn Krueger, Hunter Cálix, Sami Cálix, Ben Cálix, Dawson Damish and Bailey Damish; and four great-grandchildren, Joshua Heygood, Zachary Heygood, Alicia Heygood and Olive Rose Barry; and three great-nieces and nephews, Victor Womack, Scarlett Swindler and Ryan Swindler. Preceded in death by a brother, Alonso Cálix Meléndez. He earned a Ph.D. in pharmacy in El Salvador. Born in Honduras, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1961 and was joined by his bride and four children in May 1963. His family eventually grew to five children. He worked hard to open his own business: Cal-Chem. An especially good dancer, he had a ready smile and an uncanny knack for story-telling. Affectionately known as the "Candy Man," in his later years, his jovial spirit and relentless generosity preceded him everywhere he went. The grandkids, like most of us, called him "Amigo."
